It is not bad, many hosting providers used to do such offer... maybe one or twice in a year.

It is a bad idea because your host can easily scam you and steal the domain and the website. Register your domain at GoDaddy.com or other trusted domain registrars and buy hosting from trusted hosting websites.

I would better buy hosting and register domain names separately..

There is nothing as free. It's just a marketing strategy to get more customers signup coz they get a free domain.
