Don't think you have to be perfect before you start a new task or enterprise. Everyone starts somewhere. So start wherever you are right now.
How to kill perfectionism
I have found that perfectionism and procrastination are two sides of the same coin. They are, in fact, twins. We frequently delay in tackling a task, we say, because we want to make sure that we doing everything perfectly. However, deep down inside, we have to come to terms with our own self-doubts and lack of confidence.
If you really think about it, you will also recognize that we seldom hesitate to jump into the activities in which we excel. Indeed, we go for the gusto when we are playing to our strengths. No reluctance or self-doubt there. Just face your fears openly. Acknowledge them. They will soon be dispelled when you take big, bold, massive action toward accomplishing your dreams.
Perfectionism - What's bad about being too good?
Lao Tzu, the famous Chinese philosopher, said, "Do the difficult things while they are easy and do the great things while they are small. A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step. "
The problem with perfectionism is that it robs you of your desire and ability to perform. It creates self-doubts that prevent from moving forward with confidence.
The only way you can get a true measure of what you can actually do, is to begin the process of doing it. To use a sports analogy, you never know how the game will turn out until it is played. Even though one team may have a far superior win-loss percentage, they have no guarantee that they will win the game. That's why they play the game. That's also why the perfectionist must get into the game.
How to let go of perfectionism
A lot of people want to know how to stop perfectionism. Well, when you have a goal which is simply too big to ignore, you can stop perfectionism in its tracks. When your motivation is great enough, you will move forward.
If I asked you to walk on a high wire 20 feet in the air without a safety net, you would probably refuse. But if walking on that same high wire was the only way you could save your child from danger, I'm sure you would take that walk. You see, you don't have to be perfect before you take action.
How to beat perfectionism
Start your business today. It's okay not to know all of the answers. Napoleon Hill, the renowned author of "Think and Grow Rich", stated, "Don't wait. The time will never be just right."
For example, the heart surgeon has to start somewhere. Your cardiologist might have been a bit hesitant as she began her first quadruple bypass operation. But she had confidence in her training, and she realized that the only way she would get better and develop her skills was to plunge in - so to speak. And if because of an emergency you urgently needed her services, you certainly would not be grilling her about her medical school GPA.
Examine your passions. What do you truly want to achieve in your lifetime? That may be just the place for you to begin your new business. Of course it is usually beneficial to have a record of achievement in some area - in academics, in athletics, in service to others, or in the arts - because that indicates that you have a history of discipline towards reaching your goals. But you definitely don't need to be an expert business person before you start to grow your business.
Remember, perfectionism is the enemy of achievement. I understand that you might be a little fearful as you approach starting your own internet business. That's understandable. You are stepping out of your comfort zone, but don't let perfectionism stop you from accomplishing your goals.
