Most people think that forums are useless and building on the left of them has no effect on rankings. Forum signatures may be useful only when they PR page, I noticed Google or another search engine gives very less value to signatures. Have you ever tried to check your back links? You'll notice that none of forum signature will appear in the results. However, forum signatures counted as backlinks, but only useful if thread gets older and it gets some PR. I've seen as placing your link in the post not in the signature, search engines count as good back link. Sometimes no follow links are displayed in Google results as a link back when I posted the link in messages. Recently I was assigned to 1000 forum posts on high PR forums to do. I learned a lot from that project, we can search out via forum signatures. My client asked for the link on those pages that have gone through last Google PR update and it worked pretty good place. If I messages on this page are created they already have a number of PR3 to 4, a portion of the pages have a low PR, but it is also useful. When I was with the 500 forums posts signature links I've seen completed the keyword I was focused on a Google search comes on the first page after 1 month.
There is one thing you should keep in mind never be the same anchor text to use too many forums, like if you use anchor text in 200 forums then modify it for other forums, because it might look like car postings or remarks. Forum signatures are good for traffic and if you do something useful in your anchor text people visit your website. Forum signatures are counted as only 1 return to link, if you've made 500 posts in the forum and you are a member, it is not that your 500 back links but 1 link is counted as a backlink.
