Great points. For me, exchanging links doesn't give that much weight for your site. I always seek for one way quality link for a page so it can have a more relevant rank for a certain keyword.

1. Provide your visitors with free content.
Your content will be more attractive to your visitors if it's up-to-date or original. You could also offer people the option to reprint the content in their e-zine or web site.
People are surfing the internet for information and if your website contain information related to their area of interest, they are going to love your sites. So make sure that the information on your site is of relevant and good quality content.
Nowadays, blogging has become very popular as it is the best way to provide free content and keep it up to date. By writing a blog, you can build a community around your blog readers and create a trusting relationship to keep them coming back to your blog for fresh content.
2. Exchange Links
This is a sure and proven method. Rarely would you see a site where there is no link to another site. Many webmasters are willing to exchange links with one another so that they could produce more public awareness about their sites. You’ll soon see and feel the sudden upsurge of the traffic coming in to your site from other sites.
A major prerequisite in exchanging links with other sites is having the same niche or content as the other site. They should share a common subject so that there is continuity in the providing of service and information to what interests your target traffic.
Exchanging links also boosts your chances of getting a high ranking in search engine results. It is common knowledge that search engines ranks high sites that have inbound and outbound theme-related links. With a good ranking position in the search engines, you will generate more traffic in your website without the high costs.
3. Write and Submit Articles
There are many e-zines and online encyclopedias in the internet which provides free space for articles to be submitted. If you want to save costs, you can do the articles yourself. There are many freelance writers who are willing to write for you for a small fee, but to save money, it is wise to do those articles yourself.
Write articles that are themed along with the niche of your site. Write something that you have expertise on so that when they read it, they can feel your knowledge about the subject and will be eager to go to your site. Write articles that produce tips and guidelines to the subject or niche your site has.
Include a resource box at the end of your article that can link them to your site. Write a little about yourself and your site. If you provide a light, information-laden and interesting article, they will go to your site for more.
4. Provide free software.
Software is a great gift as it is often perceived as higher value than ebook or newsletter.
It could be freeware, shareware, demos etc. You could even turn part of your site into a free software directory.
The free software should be related to your area of niche and is able to assist your visitors in some ways. For example, if your website is about weight loss, you can include a weight loss calculator on your website and allow your visitor free use or free download of the software.
If you know how to create software, you can include your links or banners within the software and allow other people to give it away. It is another great way to create viral marketing for your website.

They say that the directory submission can't contribute traffic anymore. a big No. It can generate traffic to your site just submit your sites to great list of directory like DMOZ.
Try to join in social networking sites. like Mybloglog,blogcatalog,twitter... try to have lots of followers.

If you really want to harness the power of the internet, tap into sites like youtube, facebook, myspace, photobucket, break, yahoo video, yahoo blog log,,,.
Make and publish your own videos. then use a service like tubemogul to push them out to different sites.
Watermark pictures you own and upload them to sites like photobucket. Embed the pictures into your blog and use the "alt" tag to tell the search engine what the picture is about. Google images can provide your site with a lot of traffic, so tap into that market.
Podcasting - if you have the ability to do it, then do so.
Submit your RSS feeds to sites like Yahoo Blog Log.
